Bookkeeping vs. Accounting: They Aren’t the Same Thing

Bookkeeping and accounting work together, but they serve different purposes. Bookkeeping is the day-to-day process of recording transactions, categorizing income and expenses, reconciling accounts, and keeping supporting documentation organized.

Accounting uses those records to prepare and interpret financial reports, evaluate performance, and support tax planning and decisions. Accurate bookkeeping makes accounting more useful.

What this means for your business

Consistent records help you understand what you earned, what you spent, what customers owe, and which bills are coming due. If records are incomplete, even sophisticated financial analysis may be misleading.

Start with a repeatable monthly process: record transactions, reconcile bank and credit-card accounts, review outstanding items, and preserve receipts.
